Hello,
Welcome to HALFTIME by Zannoza
What do you know about the history of football? The weekend was a long one, coupled with the holiday which gave me some time to watch football and do some thinking too.
What is the history of football? This question was in my head all day, especially after watching that game between Newcastle and Tottenham.
I picked up my phone before the Manchester United vs Brighton game to read briefly about the history of football.
Here is a Brief History of Football
Football as a game has a rich and ancient history, spanning over centuries and has largely evolved into what we know it to be today.
Football has been around for over 3000 years, In one of its earliest forms, the Aztecs called it Tchatali. In some ritual occasions, the ball would symbolize the sun and the captain of the losing team would be sacrificed to the gods.
Yes! you heard me right, Sacrifice 😂🤔
The first known ball game which also involved kicking was a game called "cuju" played during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD). Cuju involved kicking a leather ball through a small net without using hands, and it was often played during military exercises to improve physical fitness.
A similar game called "harpastum" was played in ancient Rome, which involved kicking or carrying a small ball across a goal line. The game was highly physical and was often played in a rough and competitive manner.
In medieval Europe, various versions of football were played, including "mob football" in England, where large groups of people would compete against each other by kicking a ball made of inflated animal bladders through the streets of their towns. Mob football was a chaotic and unruly game that sometimes led to injuries, property damage and death.
The modern form of football, as we know it today, originated in England in the 19th century. In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was formed in England, and they standardized the rules of the game, including the use of a round ball and the prohibition of using hands, except for the goalkeeper. This marked the beginning of organized and regulated football.
Football quickly gained popularity across the British Empire and beyond, with the first official football match between two organized teams taking place in 1863 between London clubs, Barnes and Richmond. The first international football match was played in 1872 between England and Scotland, ending in a draw.
As football continued to grow in popularity, various football associations were formed in different countries, leading to the establishment of international competitions such as the FA Cup in England (1871) and the Copa del Rey in Spain (1903). The first international football tournament, the British Home Championship, was held in 1884 and involved teams from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
The first international football organization, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), was founded in 1904 to oversee the development and regulation of the sport worldwide. FIFA has since become the governing body of international football and organizes major competitions such as the FIFA World Cup, which has been held since 1930 and is one of the most-watched and prestigious sporting events in the world.
Today, football is the most popular and widely played sport in the world, with millions of people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying the game at various levels, from grassroots to professional. The sport continues to evolve, with new rules, technologies, and competitions shaping its future, but its rich history and global appeal remain an integral part of football's charm and enduring popularity.
